Heartwood is the only facility in Sarasota/Manatee with an RYCS designation (Yoga Alliance certified children's yoga school) and as such, our teachers are all experienced, qualified youth yoga professionals skilled at sharing yoga for kids with the younger generation. Yoga for children includes games, activities, stories, and other fun practices to build character, citizenship, environmental awareness, and compassion for others. Yoga for teens is a progressive program to build a strong foundational yoga practice with an introduction to yoga as a path to personal balance and inner peace. Yoga is a positive and healthy path for children & young adults to build personal self esteem and self acceptance, and learn tools and practices to enhance emotional balance, stress control and positive ways of interacting with others.
Heartwood closes during special weeks in the summer so we can devote the property exclusively to our youth campers (ages 5 -10) for a safe, action packed, yoga-friendly experience. Yoga Camp at Heartwood Retreat Center gives kids a chance to spread out and enjoy both an indoor and outdoor experiences on our beautiful grounds with art, movement, and creative games designed to explore the natural world and as we explore ways to become our healthiest selves. Students learn age appropriate yoga and meditation in ways that are anything but dull, including aerial yoga, partner yoga, wet and wild yoga (outside under sprinklers) blindfolded yoga and more. Students work on creative, mindful art projects including mandala making, dream-catchers, henna painting, expressive journaling and more. They learn to make and keep a crafty journal for emotional balance and creative awareness, and play with concepts such as crystal grids, reiki, animal guides, and other methods of self-knowing, trusting their instincts, choosing kindness, or self-calming to help kids deal with the negative or hurtful influences they may run up against.Our young yogis skip the labyrinth, listen to stories around the medicine wheel, learn about energy in the chakra garden and more. Camp activities center on daily themes such as personal health, organic eating, environmental awareness, respect for others, exploring positive ways to deal with conflict and stress, and building a self respect and a positive self identity. Space is limited. We accept only 12 students in each level, and we maintain a ratio of at least one teacher to 6 kids so the day remains progressive and educational, while also assuring everyone gets individual attention and the day keeps moving, so sign up early! Students bring lunch each day, but snacks are provided.
Pre-teen and Teen yoga camp embraces more traditional yoga approaches, and includes intuitive arts such as making mandalas, journaling, dreamcatchers and other mindful arts, as well as learning to apply henna, understand the basics of energy studies, (chakras, reiki) and lots of yoga theory and practice. In addition to learning alignment and postures of traditional yoga, students will do aerial yoga, partner & acro yoga and more. Students explore a variety of yoga styles with emphasis on how yoga supports our life regarding the issues that young adults face today, such as peer pressure, balancing emotions, dealing with stress and the dynamics of school, friendships, and making positive, healthful choices.
